February 12, 2023 - INSCRIPTIONS FROM THE HEART

When I was in grade 10 I applied to be on our school’s student council. One of the interview questions they gave us to prepare was, “If you were any household appliance, what would you be and why?” I sat in our living room for a long while thinking about a creative answer and when I glanced at our bathroom, it finally came to me. When the teacher asked me the question, I replied, “I would be a toilet, because I’m willing to do the dirty work and get it done quickly and efficiently.” (I did get the position and I’m pretty sure it was my toilet answer that did it.)

When it comes to serving in church, there may be some tasks and responsibilities that seem less desirable than others. There are not a lot of people jumping at the opportunity to clean toilets in church or give out winter supplies in the bitter cold to those without a home. There may also be jobs that seem inconsequential, and we decide not to do them because “no one will notice if it’s not done.” Imagine a society though where these kinds of jobs aren’t done because everyone wants the fun jobs or the ones that will get them recognition. It would fall apart!

I pray that we all discover our unique spiritual gifts and joyfully use them for the glory of God and the benefit of others, no matter what kind of work God calls us to!
