Busy and yet Bored?
Is this not true sometimes of us? There seems to be little joy in much-doing! Chares Ringma observes that being busy is our way of life but being bored in spite of our much-doing is a tragedy of enormous proportions (DTJ, 84). Apparently our daily work does not bring fulfilment anymore and as a consequence we don’t get highly motivated anymore in what we do at school, at home, at work, at church, at business, etc. So how do we battle with such a predicament, busy and yet bored? When our daily busy schedule becomes a burden, non-inspiring and non-enriching? Do we need to change the kind of job that we have or change the location where we practice our profession? Or when is enough “enough” that we don’t get fulfilment anymore even at the height of success and good progress?
Well, we need to do something about this, right? Something very fundamental must take place, namely;
We must celebrate the miracle of life daily – because life itself is a miracle! We must learn how to celebrate the “ordinary” and while we also need “extra-ordinary” scenarios beyond the ordinary daily routine, we need to have a “micro” instead of macro visuals of what God is doing in and through our lives. Then the ordinary becomes the extra-ordinary!
We must comprehend that our spirituality should govern our vocational ability - our walk with God will be the defining and controlling factor in what and who we are in the work place, when we are at home, in school and in the society at large. When we are able to understand that what we do daily is an integral part of our spirituality and no matter how busy and complex our day may be, we don’t get bored but rather we enjoy what we do because we know that we do because it is part of being a Christian and because we do everything as unto the Lord, to whom we are answerable at the end of the day.
Church, work, school, business, parenting and many more while it makes us so busy every day and as long as we know that it is an integral part of our spirituality, we can then expect that it will result to sharpen the persons we are becoming and to build the world we are shaping.
Why don’t you get busy of the things for God’s glory and you will truly be happy!
23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. (Col.3:23-24)
