Keep His Commandments

By Pastor Immanuel Garcera

Love is an interesting concept. We can say we love our significant other, spouse, or children, and then at the same time say we love food, like pizza or sushi. Even in the same breath, exclaim that we love a movie or a celebrity (that we don't know) that shows up in the said movie. However, true love is demonstrated through action. With a life dedicated to each other as husband and wife, as parents providing to their children; in honouring and respecting our parents. So, in the topic of love and obedience, similarly, our faith is not only defined by our feelings but also by our actions.

Jesus told the disciples (and us) the world will know we are His disciples if we love one another, as He gave them a New Command to love each other as He has loved them (John 13). That's a big ask considering that Jesus loves us a lot. Jesus also said in His Word that, "he who obeys my command is the one that loves me" (John 14). So, as important it is to love and accompany it with action in a romantic sense, it's also equally, if not more important in our faith. As C.S. Lewis once said, "love is not a feeling. It is a will, a commitment, a decision. It is an action, not a passion."

So church, let's be reminded that the feeling of love will fade, and then will have to make a choice to commit ourselves to action. This applies not just to our loved ones, but especially to the One who first loved us. Let us be found faithful in obedience for that is the mark of a person who truly loves God.

To God be the glory!
