Some people think that discerning God’s will and doing it is reserved territory for spiritual giants. Others approach it like they would consult a fortune teller or as if it was all magic. Is it possible for ordinary persons like you and I to discern God’s will? If so, how can we discern God’s will?
Some of the unreliable and dangerous methods people use to discern God’s will are: 1) random approach to Scripture 2) personal experience 3) when God shows me every detail 3) circumstantial evidence 4) what people say 5) God told me. Yes, we can know God’s will but how? We can know the will of God the more we know Him whose will it is we desire to discern and do. Our Helper, Teacher and Guide is God the Holy Spirit. Our primary resource material is the Scriptures/The Holy Bible.
Jesus is the way (John 14:6-7 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”) God does not always give us all the details. We need to follow Him one step and one day at a time.
Jesus is our model (John 5:19-20 19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.)
Jesus has the servant attitude (Philippians 2:5-11 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.) God uses people who have a servant heart and are willing to serve.
We discern God’s will and are able to act on it when we remain connected to Jesus Christ (John 15:5 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.).
