Set An Example: 1 Timothy 4:12

Growing up in the church, I've always heard this verse among the young people, and they start it off by saying "the Bible says -- don't let people look down on you because you are young"! And it becomes a slap-back to when adults (usually) belittle or criticize young people in anyway. But this passage from the first letter of Paul to the young pastor Timothy is just a first half of the actual passage, the whole verse goes like this:

12 Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

The reason Paul says you won't let people look down on you is because you're setting a standard, an example for believers (not just the world) for speech, conduct (or actions), in love, in faith, and in purity. Let's face it, in these categories the standards these days are pretty low if we're being honest - so young people, don't be surprised if you get criticized because we probably need to do better in setting an example.

As young people, we need to lead the charge of what it means to be followers of Jesus as we follow His example -- in our words, actions, love, faith, and purity. Don't just say "don't look down on me!" give people a reason not to by the standard you set.

To God be the glory!
